The ambitious plans of the giant Fiat Chrysler Automobiles that runs Sergio Marchionne happen to have half of its range electrified by the year 2022. This does not mean that one of every two Fiat, Maserati or Ferrari will be pure electric in five years, But they will resort to hybrid technologies.

FCA's boss has recently stated that all new Maserati models will be electrified from 2019, when Marchionne also has the idea of retiring. "What has made this a mandatory issue is the fate of diesel, especially in Europe. Some kind of electrification in gasoline engines is inevitable," says the Italian.

"When Maserati completes the development of its two new models, it will evolve its entire range towards electrification," says Marchionne, who has also confirmed that Maserati's offer will also include fully electric models to compete against Tesla. Of course, FCA has no plans to manufacture its own batteries.
It may be shocking that such an immediate decision on electrification for a group that has barely adopted these solutions in recent times, with just a couple of examples, such as the electric Fiat 500e (with which Marchionne acknowledged that they lost money) or the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in hybrid, but plans by many countries and cities in Europe to ban motor-driven vehicles have accelerated plans to offer alternatives.

The main financial problem with FCA electrification is not the cost of developing the technology itself, but the need to reduce variable costs of production (batteries, motors and so on). FCA's plans for the next five years will not be known in detail until the meeting with investors is held at the beginning of next year.

Alfieri electric?

Meanwhile, rumors suggest that the first zero-emission model will be based on the Maserati Alfieri concept, which Marchionne himself already spoke a few months ago, but also the possibility of an urban Fiat, also 100% electric.
In any case, this pure two-seater Alfieri, with coupé bodywork and based on a completely new platform, would not arrive until 2020, although Maserati would have a plug-in hybrid already in 2019, in the form of the Levante (the new SUV of the house ), Which would take the Pacifica propulsion system.
