Volkswagen California XXL

A few days ago we knew the first brushstrokes of the 'motorhome' version of the Volkswagen Crafter: the California XXL concept that has already been unveiled at the Caravan Salon 2017 in Düsseldorf. The older brother of the California has full traction and air suspension, high panoramic fixed ceiling, a height of up to 2,200 mm and an interior that invites you to spend a perpetual vacation: living room, functional kitchen with two refrigerators and gas plates, retractable shower unit, bedrooms for children, underfloor heating
The 'motorhome' version of the Volkswagen Crafter, a van 2.0 that led the German industrial offensive, is shaping up to be a real house on wheels. The new caravan is 2,030 mm wide (2,424 mm including exterior mirrors) and 2,900 mm high, making it 102 mm higher than a Crafter van. The interior remains illuminated during the day thanks to the double ambient illumination and the panoramic roof, 1,100 mm wide and 3,700 mm long.
This dimension allows to create an interior with a height of up to 2,200 mm and an alcove in the front, just above the cabin and designed for children and young passengers. The use of space has been optimized in such a way that you can 'play the Tetrix' with the spaces: seen from above, the motorhome can be divided into six areas, which, depending on the use, combine with each other.
The kitchen, the wet room with shower, the washbasin and toilet, the living room and the dining room occupy a central place in this mobile home. The multifunctional kitchen has a countertop that can extend from 1,100 mm to 2,050 mm in total, a retractable gas cooker, two refrigerators, each with a capacity of 50 liters and multiple cabinets and drawers.
One of the greatest amenities is the retractable showerhead, which can be pulled out through the kitchen unit when not in use, doubling the bathroom space. Like the front seats in California, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has also equipped the California XXL with driver and front passenger seats that can be rotated 180 degrees.
The living room has a large folding table (910 mm long, 600 mm wide and 700 mm high) and lighting composed by projectors and ambient light in each corner of the space, and in the back extends a bed almost King Size, which can be cooled or heated through the electrical system and stored when not in use.
There are 220 V plugs as well as AUX and USB ports for connecting and charging smartphones and tablets; in addition a digital projector has been integrated into the head of the bed, which can be used to project videos, photos and TV via smartphone or tablet on the white back wall of the wet room of the bathroom.
The California XXL is powered by a 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine with 177 hp and a torque of 410 Nm. The concept comes with the same 4MOTION all-wheel drive used in the Crafter and a clutch Haldex distributes the power of the engine in a totally variable way between the rear and front axles, depending on the grip conditions.
On-board technical equipment includes underfloor heating, hot water boiler, fresh water tank (140 liters) and waste water tank (90 liters), which are housed in the rear. Also here you can store the chairs and folding table to make the entrance a palatable porch. Behind the back door there is also a large storage space of about 1,600 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 720 mm in height.
All this without forgetting that the functions of the vehicle can be controlled using a specific app that is located in the center console, which acts as a digital control center. Now, the question is whether we will see this prototype in production and rolling down the road, and if the price does not get out of hand.
